Enhancing User Engagement with New Features and a Smartwatch App
Project Goal The project aimed to develop a popular health-tracking app with a target of achieving a 15% improvement in Monthly Active Users (MAU). The goal was to lead the competitive healthcare market by introducing new features, enhancing the user experience, and launching a wearable OS smartwatch application to complement the product. The scope of the project focused on ensuring an excellent user experience, maintaining high data privacy standards, and expanding the app ecosystem to position it as a market leader in health-tracking solutions.
Market Challenges The health-tracking app market is highly competitive, with consumers expecting innovative features, a seamless user experience, and robust data privacy measures. To stand out in this competitive landscape, the client—operating a GDPR-compliant health-tracking app with millions of active users globally—aimed to increase Monthly Active Users (MAU) by 15%.
Project Scope and Deliverables The project involved delivering new features for both iOS and Android platforms, improving the app’s usability and user interface (UI), and developing a complementary smartwatch application for Wear OS. These initiatives were designed to boost user engagement, satisfaction, and trust, thereby solidifying the app’s position as a leader in the health-tracking app category.
The Client had a powerful application with lots of functionality: tracking physical activity, mood changes, and health states. However, some difficulties also existed:
With new players entering the market and competitors improving their products, innovation was in order for the Client to be ahead of the curve.
Although the in-house development team was great, it still had a huge list of features. Delivering new functionalities at this speed would require extra resources with much difficulty.
Since the app already had more than millions of users, continued engagement and active user growth would ask for a great update set, an improved user experience, and wider compatibility with various devices.
As a healthcare app, upholding user data privacy was of utmost concern. Enhancing data anonymization and security was very crucial to building trust with the users on the platform.
The Client collaborated with a professional team of mobile and healthcare software developers to overcome such obstacles. It allowed the company to import two Android and two iOS developers and deliver new features much faster. This solution was multi-faceted and delivered outstanding results in several key areas as follows:
The developers closely cooperated with the core team of the Client to launch a set of features meant to increase user engagement. Usability Improvements: Simplification of navigation, expansion of localization, introduction of notifications of various types for being in touch with the right message at the right moment, and In-app Dynamic Widgets.
A new design system with consistency was designed to give a facelift to the application and give it a new look and feel. It has the following: A new color palette along with typography helps make it more readable. UI updates are automatically made, which ensures consistency in design across different versions of apps. The layout change is for better navigation and improved experience.
The developers realized that data was very important and used the best techniques of anonymization. Using Relay servers and the Oblivious HTTP protocol, user accounts were anonymously created because no sensitive data was revealed by those accounts yet gave functionality to a user.
This further increased usage by the application which was expanding into wearables. In that line of applications, Wear OS is one such application that gives one user to: Log in and logout, in using a simple API integration with the Health Platform API. Activity data reporting, like steps, distance traveled, and calories, through the sensors of a smartwatch.
Over two years of collaboration, the Client achieved remarkable outcomes through their work with the development team. Monthly Active Users (MAU) experienced consistent growth, driven by the introduction of new features, improved usability, and the availability of a complementary smartwatch application. This enhanced user engagement and encouraged users to invite others, contributing to steady growth. The implementation of stronger data privacy measures fostered higher user trust and confidence, resulting in improved loyalty toward the application. By augmenting the team with skilled developers, the Client was able to deliver smarter features consistently and on time, maintaining a competitive edge without the need for additional full-time hires. The launch of the Wear OS app further expanded the platform’s ecosystem, increasing its functionality and market share by tapping into the growing demand for health technology wearables. As the project concluded, the Client was well-positioned in the marketplace, offering a health-tracking application distinguished by unparalleled usability, functionality, and personalized features.
