The Problem

The client, Jesta Digital, needed two iOS apps to entertain and engage children through interactive sound-based content. The challenge was that these apps had to be engaging and educational but easy to use for younger audiences. Complexity of Interaction for Younger Audiences

The main design challenge was the development of an intuitive interface that children would easily understand.

Most children's apps face usability problems where icons, buttons, or interactions are not that obvious for younger users, which frustrates and abandons them. If not well considered in the design, the applications run the risk of alienating the target audience.

Sound Management and Playback Reliability

For both apps, it was essential to have seamless and lag-free sound output. If any delays or interruption in sound happened, particularly when several sounds were being played together, it could easily mar the user experience.

The applications required good management of sound in order to be able to mix multiple sounds without impacting performance.

Lack of Customization and Interaction Options

Many sound-based kids' apps are interactive to a lesser extent and mostly only allow the playing of one sound at a time. Mixing and matching of sounds is a feature that would greatly increase the engagement, and at the same time, promote creativity and extended use.

The app also needed to provide users with volume control and background music options for complete personalization.

Ensuring App Compatibility Across iOS Devices

There would be compatibility issues because of the support for multiple iPhone models and iOS versions. All the apps had to be compatible with different screen sizes and variations of iOS, so all users experienced a seamless service without lag, crashes, or distortions in interface.

The Halloween app required a countdown which was both useful and fun, keeping the interest of kids and at the same time, easy for them to understand. It's difficult to come up with an accurate and visually appealing countdown at the same time without losing that playfulness in the application.

eSparkBiz tried to make the user interface of both apps as simple as possible so that even the youngest users could easily get along with the apps. The usage was intuitive due to large colored icons and clear labels in navigation. The design followed minimalism to avoid confusing too many options and making the main interactive elements central to the user's attention.

Optimized Sound Management and Performance

In audio play errors, eSparkBiz used the AVFoundation framework offered by Apple to ensure a smooth and quality audio play. When the user tapped more than one animal icon in the Wild Animal Sounds app or Halloween icons in the Halloween Sounds app, the app simultaneously triggered sounds in multiple instances without any delay for perfect playing.

Enhanced Interactivity and Customization

There were plenty of ways to interact with each application. On Wild Animal Sounds app, it was possible for the users to layer some of their chosen sounds into an all-around personal mix of wild animal sounds.

The Halloween Sounds had provided the option for on/off background music in addition to enabling control over a given level at which some of those sounds play to make as the person wants. Providing countdown is an interesting form of interaction inside the Halloween application; such interaction makes engaging more efficient by waiting for its end.

Fun and Engaging Countdown Feature

The Halloween Sounds app countdown must be so inviting, yet understandable. In other words, it's a countdown timer which will appear on the primary screen displaying the number of days remaining for the Halloween festival to arrive. For this, the team ensured that the count is automatically updated daily. The user will not be asked to do this himself by hand

Cross-Device Compatibility

ESparkBiz tested the apps on different iPhone models and iOS versions to ensure that both apps run perfectly on all supported devices. The developers have optimized the apps for different screen sizes, and icons, buttons, and interface elements are properly aligned in all devices. The apps also had compatibility testing with iOS 12 and above to provide broad access.

The Result

The project was completed, and both apps were released at no charge in the App Store for free download. Client feedback received a healthy number of good user reviews, particularly from parents and educators, who felt both entertaining and educational about the applications. “Wild Animal Sounds” was adopted as the best resource available for learning about animals while “Halloween Sounds & Countdown” was discovered well ahead of the holiday with many of those customers using it to gear up for the holiday.

The project reaffirms the usability of user-centric design when it comes to young-age audiences. Children’s apps need to be easily navigated by simple icons and content. On the other hand, for reaching as wide an audience as possible, compatibility with several devices was also essential.

Both these applications remain in high demand by the target audience. It helped them build brand awareness with respect to Jesta Digital within the children’s entertainment application market. These successful applications also proved a catalyst for future collaborations because the client wished to move into other interactive, sound-based experiences.
