The online education space for learning American Sign Language (ASL) has long been fragmented, with learners often forced to piece together their knowledge from disconnected sources such as YouTube tutorials, generic language-learning apps, Zoom classes, PDFs, and scattered social media content—most of which lack a structured curriculum, consistent accessibility, meaningful community engagement, and, importantly, authentic Deaf-led instruction. Recognizing these gaps, the vision behind The ASL Shop was to create a unified, modern, and scalable learning platform that makes ASL education accessible anytime and anywhere, while also actively supporting Deaf culture, promoting inclusivity, and fostering genuine human connection between learners. To bring this vision to life, eSpark partnered with The ASL Shop to design and develop a comprehensive digital ecosystem spanning both web and mobile platforms, seamlessly integrating self-paced ASL courses, live interactive learning sessions, community-driven engagement features, robust subscription management, and high-quality video-based educational content. The backend was carefully designed using Node.js with a modular structure, separating key functionalities like authentication, course management, video handling, subscriptions, notifications, community features, and analytics. This approach not only keeps the system organized but also allows each component to scale independently, making it easier to introduce new features or improvements without disrupting the entire platform.

Advanced Security And Access Control

Security was treated as a core priority. A robust role-based access control (RBAC) system was implemented to manage different user roles with precise permissions. Secure authentication flows, session management, and controlled access mechanisms were put in place to ensure that sensitive data, course content, and administrative tools remain protected, creating a safe and trustworthy environment for all users.

Performance Optimisation
